The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting public comments through May 29, 2026, on plans to restore the damaged Funter Bay Cannery Float in Funter Bay.

The facility sustained extensive damage over the winter. The shore access float, pedestrian gangway, and approach trestle are currently closed. The primary mooring float remains open for transient boaters, but shore access will not be available until repairs are complete.

The restoration project would remove and dispose of existing timber and steel piles, relocate a 10-foot by 125-foot float, and refurbish the approach and existing gangway. The project would also replace the existing 10-foot by 50-foot float with a new timber 12-foot by 50-foot float. The existing seaplane float, which is no longer in place, will not be included due to funding limitations.

Engineering and environmental studies are expected to conclude in late fall 2026. Construction is projected to begin in 2027.

The department is partnering with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Program on the project.
