The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will restrict truck weights on most Northern Region roads starting May 1 at 8 a.m. as spring thaw weakens pavement.

The restrictions apply to all vehicles over 10,000 pounds and vary by road condition. Most highways will allow 85 percent of legal axle loads, while secondary roads face limits as low as 50 percent. The Elliott and Dalton highways remain unrestricted.

The Parks Highway from Cantwell to Fairbanks and other roads in the Fairbanks North Star Borough will allow full legal loads. The Richardson Highway from Valdez to Johnson Road, Glenn Highway from the region boundary to Glennallen, Alaska Highway from the Canadian border to Delta, and Tok Cutoff will be limited to 85 percent.

Roads around Healy, Cordova, Northway, and many Fairbanks-area roads including Chena Hot Springs Road and Goldstream Road will be restricted to 75 percent. The Elliott Highway from Livengood to Manley, Nabesna Road, McCarthy Road, and most Delta-area roads face 50 percent limits.

Long combination vehicles of 90 feet or more with at least two trailers can carry full legal loads on drive axles on some routes. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division will enforce the restrictions.

The department monitors weather and pavement conditions and will adjust restrictions as needed. Current weight restriction notices are posted at dot.state.ak.us/mscve/main.cfm under Public Notices.
