Alaska ferry system seeks contractor for stormwater testing at 13 terminals

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting bids through May 29 for a contractor to analyze stormwater samples at 13 Alaska Marine Highway System ferry terminals statewide.

The contract requires quarterly testing for heavy metals including aluminum, iron, lead and zinc at all facilities, plus annual biochemical oxygen demand monitoring at the Ketchikan Marine Engineering Facility. The winning bidder will supply 140 sample kits annually and deliver results by the 15th of each month following the quarter's end to meet state environmental reporting deadlines.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation administers stormwater discharge permits under the Alaska Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, which governs runoff from industrial facilities including ferry terminals.

Bidders must have five years of experience analyzing heavy metals for Multi-Sector General Permit holders and hold state certification for microbiological and chemical analysis of drinking water. The contract runs from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, with options to renew for four additional one-year terms.
