State seeks public input on gravel extraction site near Chignik Lagoon

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through June 5 on a proposal to designate a 12-acre gravel extraction site in the tide and submerged lands of Chignik Lagoon.

The site sits about 2,000 feet northeast of Chignik Lagoon Airport, near Old Ladies Creek. The state Division of Mining, Land and Water applied to designate the location for material extraction with no set end date.

The agency is seeking information about potential impacts of gravel extraction at this location. Officials want to know about any land use conflicts or environmental concerns that should be addressed before the state issues contracts to extract material from the site.

The 12-acre site falls within the northeast quarter of Section 5 and northwest quarter of Section 4, Township 45 South, Range 59 West, Seward Meridian.

Written comments must reach the South Central Regional Land Office at 550 7th Ave suite 900c, Anchorage, Alaska 99501 by 11:59 p.m. on June 5. Comments can also be emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 907-269-8913.
