The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through May 8 on a proposed temporary ban on firing weapons at part of the Slipper Lake Public Use Site during a cleanup event. If approved, no weapons could be discharged in a 694-acre section of the site on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for safety reasons during cleanup activities. The restricted area covers portions of sections 16 and 21 within the Jonesville Public Use Area and Matanuska Valley Moose Range. The Southcentral Regional Land Office is considering the restriction to ensure worker and public safety during the cleanup. The site is popular for recreational shooting, hunting and other outdoor activities. Written comments must be received by 5 p.m. on May 8 at the Southcentral Regional Land Office, 550 W. 7th Ave., Suite 900C, Anchorage, AK 99501-3577.
