The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments through May 25 on a proposed air quality permit renewal for Teck Alaska Incorporated's Red Dog Mine, located 90 miles north of Kotzebue.

The state agency has made a preliminary decision to approve a minor permit modification and renew the mine's operating permit. The zinc and lead mine would be authorized to emit up to 3,256 tons of nitrogen oxides, 291 tons of carbon monoxide, 240 tons of particulate matter, and 278 tons of sulfur dioxide annually, among other pollutants.

Teck Alaska applied for the minor permit to rescind multiple operational reporting levels and requested the operating permit renewal in July 2024. The company's address is 2525 C Street, Suite 310, Anchorage.

The draft permits and technical analysis are available at the Department of Environmental Conservation offices in Juneau and Anchorage, and online at dec.alaska.gov/Applications/Air/airtoolsweb/AirPermitsApprovalsAndPublicNotices.
