Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company is seeking state permission to install a new pipeline that would carry treated wastewater from its mine operations to a permitted discharge point in Hawk Inlet, about 18 miles southwest of Juneau. The project would involve laying approximately 4,062 feet of 14-inch plastic pipe across state-owned tidelands and underwater areas of Hawk Inlet. The pipeline would transport treated water from the mine's Pond 7 Water Treatment Plant to an existing permitted discharge zone. Public comments are due by 5 p.m. on May 6. The installation would require heavy equipment including excavators and a large support barge measuring 185 feet by 50 feet. The new pipeline would follow part of the route of an existing outfall before branching off to its own alignment on the seafloor. The company is requesting a 15-year permit for the pipeline, which would operate under the mine's existing pollution discharge permit. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources will review all public comments before deciding whether to approve the project, potentially with conditions.
