The Alaska Legislative Council voted 11-0 Tuesday to renew the lease for the Bethel Legislative Information Office for one year at a cost of $70,200.

The council approved the first of five one-year renewal options built into the original five-year lease agreement between the Legislative Affairs Agency and Bethel Native Corporation. The renewal runs from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Four more one-year renewal options remain available.

Procurement Officer J.C. Kestel told the council the lease rate is locked in for the year but remains subject to annual Consumer Price Index adjustments for variable costs such as heating fuel and electricity.

Senator Tobin raised concerns about volatility in rural energy costs. Many Alaska communities have seen significant swings in oil, heating fuel, and electrical generation expenses in recent weeks. Kestel confirmed the lease structure protects the legislature from mid-year cost increases while allowing for annual CPI-based adjustments.

The Bethel office is one of several Legislative Information Offices the legislature maintains in communities across Alaska. The offices provide constituent services and public access to the legislative process outside Juneau.

The original lease agreement included a five-year initial term followed by five optional one-year extensions. This gives the legislature flexibility while securing long-term office space in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta hub community.

With four renewal options still available, the legislature can continue occupying the Bethel office space through June 30, 2031 without renegotiating the base agreement. Annual CPI adjustments will continue to apply to account for inflation and changing operating costs.

The council took the action at its regular meeting in Juneau on April 15.
