State seeks public comment on Sterling sewage disposal permit

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments through June 15 on a permit application for a sewage solids disposal facility in Sterling.

SWW MGMT LLC has applied to operate a monofill at 37605 Robinson Loop Road that would accept dewatered septage from the Sterling Water Works treatment plant on the same property. The facility would dispose of approximately 2,196 cubic yards of sewage solids annually from domestic sources.

The monofill would be built in two phases on four acres of a 28-acre parcel owned by Andrew Holland. Each phase would create a separate disposal cell with a usable volume of 1,098 cubic yards, limiting the area of open monofill at any time. The facility would accept only sewage solids generated from the on-site treatment plant, which dewaters septage from domestic sources.

The department will review all comments before deciding whether to issue the permit.
