The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through April 28 on a proposal to expand placer mining operations on Sourdough Creek near Fairbanks. The deadline is 5:00 p.m. Alaska Standard Time.

Vanessa Baker-Hendrix has applied to add equipment and install a gate at her existing mining claim in the Fairbanks Mining District. The operation covers portions of four sections about 36 miles northeast of Fairbanks in Township 6 North, Range 6 East.

The application seeks a miscellaneous land use permit for mechanical placer mining on state lands. If approved, the authorization would run through December 31, 2028, with possible extensions. The proposal also includes winter cross-country travel on state lands outside the mining locations.

The department will review the application under state mining statutes and may issue an authorization with conditions. The activity could be modified during the review process.
