State seeks bids for Hydaburg seaplane facility refurbishment

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting bids through June 11, 2026, for a project to refurbish or potentially relocate the seaplane facility in Hydaburg, a remote Southeast Alaska community accessible only by air or water.

The project carries an estimated cost between $2.5 million and $5 million, with work scheduled for completion by November 30, 2027. The scope includes investigating replacement at a new location, not just repairs to the existing float facility.

The department requested public comments on the project or additional information requests by May 4, 2026, through Ivet Hall, P.E., Engineering Manager at the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.

Hydaburg sits on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island with a population of about 350 people, predominantly Haida. The community has no road connection to other towns, making the seaplane facility a critical transportation link for residents, supplies, and emergency services.

Bids are due at 2:00 p.m. on June 11, 2026, at the Construction Contracts Office in Juneau. Plans and specifications are available for free download at www.bidx.com/ak/lettings. Hard copies cost $100 per set from the Southeast Regional Contracts office.

The project is funded through a federal-state partnership. Companies owned by women, minorities, and people with disabilities are encouraged to bid.
