Nelson Lagoon committee to clarify salmon, caribou hunting rules May 22

The Nelson Lagoon Fish and Game Advisory Committee will meet May 22 at 1:00 p.m. by teleconference to clarify unclear salmon retention and caribou hunting regulations affecting users in one of Alaska's most isolated regions.

The committee will address confusion around salmon retention rules and Caribou Flats hunting regulations. The meeting is open to the public via Zoom and phone.

Advisory committees across Alaska have been working to clarify fishing and hunting regulations for local communities. Alaska News previously reported that the Board of Game is seeking hunting and trapping rule changes for 2026-27, and the Nushagak committee discussed caribou hunt proposals in April.

The committee serves as a local forum to develop regulatory proposals and provide recommendations to the Alaska Board of Fisheries and Alaska Board of Game. Mark McNeley chairs the committee, with Tim Heuker as vice chair and Angela Johnson as secretary. A quorum of six members is required to conduct business.
