A 3-year-old boy died Thursday night after falling through thin ice on the Goodnews River in Goodnews Bay, a remote village in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

Alaska State Troopers received the report at 10:00 p.m. on April 23. The child had fallen through ice near a culvert on the river.

Family members and village volunteers searched for an hour and a half. They used an excavator to break through ice and recovered the child, who was found deceased. Troopers notified next of kin at the scene.

Goodnews Bay sits on the coast about 400 miles west of Anchorage. The village has fewer than 400 residents. The Goodnews River runs through the community and serves as a route for fishing and travel.

Spring brings unstable ice conditions to rivers across the delta. Ice that appears solid can have thin spots, especially near culverts and areas with moving water underneath.

The incident occurred during breakup season, when warming temperatures weaken river ice. Communities across rural Alaska face heightened risks during this transition period between winter travel and open water.

No other injuries were reported. Alaska State Troopers are conducting a death investigation.

The case highlights the dangers that delta communities face during seasonal ice transitions. Residents rely on rivers for subsistence activities and transportation, but spring conditions make ice travel unpredictable.

Goodnews Bay is accessible by air and water but has no road connection to other communities. The village depends on the river for access to traditional fishing and hunting areas.
